People have different opinions on what happens after we die. There are countless theories – some believe in heaven and hell, while others think we’re reincarnated into a new life.
But imagine this: for those who believe in reincarnation, what if you had to pass through seven trials before getting another chance at life?
Each trial judges your soul – from your lightest sins to the heaviest. So, ask yourself: What would be your lightest sin?
This concept is explored in the 2017 South Korean fantasy action film Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, based on the webtoon by Joo Ho-min and directed by Kim Yong-hwa. The story follows Kim Ja-hong (Cha Tae-hyun), a firefighter who dies in the line of duty. After death, he is escorted to the afterlife by three grim reapers who act as his guardians as he faces seven trials, each representing a different sin.
Let’s break down each of these trials:
1. Hell of Murder
At first glance, you might think, “I’ve never killed anyone, so I’m safe.” But murder isn’t just physical. It can include having the intention to kill or causing harm that leads someone else to death even indirectly.
For example, posting a hateful comment that pushes someone toward self-harm or suicide? That counts. If any of your actions have ever contributed to a death, this trial will judge it.
2. Hell of Indolence
How have you spent your time on earth? Did you live your life to the fullest or waste it through idleness and negligence? This trial examines whether you made your life meaningful, not just to yourself but to others.
3. Hell of Deceit
How many lies have you told? Deception isn’t just about what you say, it’s also about what you hide. This trial evaluates the truth you’ve twisted, concealed or ignored.
4. Hell of Injustice
This trial is for those who were unjust or cold-hearted , people who turned their backs on others in need or stood by in silence when they could’ve helped.
5. Hell of Betrayal
Have you broken someone’s trust? This trial judges acts of betrayal especially when you hurt the people who counted on you the most.
6. Hell of Violence
Whether it’s physical, emotional, or verbal violence in any form weighs heavily on the soul. This trial is especially harsh on those who target the weak or vulnerable.
7. Hell of Filial Impiety
Have you disrespected your parents or neglected your responsibilities to your family? In many cultures, honoring your parents and elders is sacred. Failing to do so is considered a grave offense in the afterlife.
Each of these trials comes with its own severe punishment and if you’re found guilty, your soul suffers for eternity.
So, now I ask you:
If you were in Kim Ja-hong’s position, which trial would come first for you?
And do you believe in reincarnation?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
